The BASF Group confirmed its presence in Iran, but said in a statement in 2018 that it would "strictly comply with all prevailing rules." That means BASF will have to steer clear of Iran's oil and gas industries, its main interest in the country, where the company had hoped to invest through its oil exploration subsidiary, Wintershall.

Last year was reported the ERG's intentions ; the Company has dedicated 2.9 billion euros to double green power capacity over the next five years to stop relying on Russian gas in the wake of the war in Ukraine. At the same time, Iran plans to reinstate plans to enter the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market and boost exports in Europe. Iran wants to offer itself as an alternative, and ERG is keen to expand too. There are no indications of any potential collaboration between the two countries at present, so the company is under investigation.
